KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 (Bernama) — Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) has been honoured with the National Energy Award (NEA) 2023 under the Special Award Category for Higher Learning Institutions in recognition of its sustainability efforts.
UTP, in a statement, said the university received the award from Deputy Prime Minister cum Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof in the NEA ceremony, which was held on March 8 in the federal capital.
“This achievement underscores UTP’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and its support for Petronas goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, ” according to the statement. Meanwhile, UTP vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib said UTP is fully aligned with Petronas’ target and actively translates this commitment into tangible actions by intensifying efforts to enhance energy efficiency and embrace cleaner technologies.
“Our efforts are exemplified by our Low Carbon Campus initiatives, including a groundbreaking 7.4MWp solar PV rooftop panel system – the largest single rooftop solar installation in Malaysia.
“Alongside promoting sustainable transportation options, water conservation measures, and campus greening projects, these initiatives have demonstrably reduced UTP’s total carbon footprint, ” he said.
Mohamed Ibrahim said the university also recognises the importance of international benchmarks and aspires to continuously improve its sustainability efforts, and rankings such as the QS World Sustainability Rankings serve as valuable tools in this ongoing process.
“Universities are uniquely positioned to drive positive change. We conduct research that develops innovative, clean energy technologies, while our educational programmes equip future generations with the knowledge and skills necessary to build a sustainable future.
“Additionally, through community engagement, we can empower our staff and students to adopt environmentally responsible practices, ” he said.
Mohamed Ibrahim said UTP remains dedicated to actively contributing to a sustainable future, inspiring the next generation of leaders to advocate for environmental stewardship.
