A TOTAL of 145 applications were submitted for the National Energy Awards (NEA) this year.
Of that number, 77 were shortlisted for three categories – energy efficiency buildings, energy management and renewable energy.
All submissions are currently being evaluated and the winners are expected to be announced in July.
The participants of NEA comprises organisations which transformed their operations or buildings to become more energy-efficient, and/or those which successfully implemented renewable energy systems to reduce carbon footprint.
The NEA acknowledges outstanding achievements and best practices in driving the country’s sustainable energy sector.
Organised by the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry (MESTECC), the NEA was inaugurated in 2018 as part of the ministry’s initiative to drive, contribute and promote energy efficiency and renewable energy in Malaysia.
MESTECC remains committed to honouring Malaysia’s pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reckons that having a concerted plan for the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency is pivotal in achieving the country’s goal.
NEA 2019 kicked off with the call for submissions in early January and closed on March 1.
In February, more than 200 industry players comprising experts, industry leaders, university representatives and local businesses were briefed on the criteria for the submissions for NEA 2019.
The briefing was done by GreenTech Malaysia, Energy Commission (ST) and Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda) representatives.
Participants were also encouraged to share their best implemented practices and solutions in energy efficiency and renewable energy that showcased innovative, cost effective and exemplary measures.
Winners of the NEA will represent the country in the Asean Energy Awards (AEA) 2019 set to be held in Thailand in November.
Malaysia has been one of the main and strong contenders and is expected to continue to fly the national flag high in this year’s edition of NEA.
Nineteen Malaysian NEA winners competed in last year’s AEA in November and 11 took home prizes.
