The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding renewable energy sources in Malaysia, outlining several strategic initiatives under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).
Answering Senator Roderick Wong Siew Lead at Dewan Negara, Deputy Minister of PETRA stated that the government is advancing solar, wind, and hydro energy through key programmes such as the Large-Scale Solar (LSS) initiative. The initiative focuses on developing large-scale solar power plants.
Additionally, the Net Energy Metering (NEM) and Solar for Self-consumption (SelCo) programmes are being promoted to encourage rooftop solar panel installations.
Other measures include the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS), which allows green electricity consumers to directly fund renewable energy projects, and the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) and Low Carbon Energy Generation Programme, aimed at developing non-solar energy sources such as biogas, biomass, small-scale hydropower, and wind energy.
These initiatives are expected to contribute towards Malaysia’s energy transition targets, increasing renewable energy’s share in electricity generation to 31% by 2025, 40% by 2035, and 70% by 2050.
