MALAKOFF Corporation Berhad (Malakoff) was honoured with the Special Submission Award at the ASEAN Energy Awards 2025, under the ASEAN Coal Awards 2025 for its Biomass Co-Firing Project at the 2,100 MW Tanjung Bin Power Plant.
The award recognises Malakoff’s efforts to integrate innovative low-carbon solutions into existing operations, supporting Malaysia’s energy transition and the region’s shift towards a more sustainable energy future.
The ceremony was held in conjunction with the 43rd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting and the 25th ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF 25) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
The AEBF 25 brought together regional energy ministers, policymakers, industry leaders and international stakeholders, and was also attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
Efforts to adopt cleaner coal technologies and sustainable practices are recognised through the ASEAN Coal Awards, which is part of the ASEAN Energy Awards 2025 and organised by the ASEAN Centre for Energy.
This year’s AEBF 25, hosted by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), carried the theme “Powering ASEAN: Bridging Boundaries, Building Prosperity”, in line with the ASEAN Malaysia Chairmanship theme “ASEAN 2025: Inclusivity and Sustainability”.
Malakoff’s Biomass Co-Firing Project involves the integration of agricultural waste, such as palm kernel shells and empty fruit bunches, as an alternative fuel source at Tanjung Bin Power Plant.
By replacing a portion of coal with biomass, the project reduces greenhouse gas emissions, supports Malaysia’s renewable energy ambitions and contributes to ASEAN’s collective decarbonisation efforts.
Malakoff Group CEO Syahrunizam Samsudin said the recognition is a testament to Malakoff’s ongoing efforts to drive Malaysia’s energy transition through practical and scalable solutions.
“By leveraging biomass co-firing at one of the country’s largest power plants, we are demonstrating how existing infrastructure can be adapted to support decarbonisation in a cost-effective and sustainable way.
“This project forms part of our broader strategy to contribute towards Malaysia’s Net Zero ambitions by 2050, while ensuring the stability and reliability of the national grid. As we continue to diversify our energy portfolio, Malakoff remains committed to supporting national policies and regional initiatives that accelerate the shift towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future,” he said in a statement.
This year, Malakoff also received the Independent Power Producer of the Year Award at Enlit Asia 2025 for the third consecutive year and a Merit Award at the National Energy Awards 2025 for its Biomass Co-Firing Project.
