UTEM has developed a Sustainable Energy Management System (SEMS) with good commitment from the top management to all the different levels of staff and students. Energy consumption has shown a downward trend from the year 2021 to 2023. An investment to replace 12 units of conventional water-cooled chillers to variable speed drive (VSD) type chillers resulted in an annual saving of about 3,352 MWh of energy.
Besides this, it has consistently conducted continuous training programmes on energy management. Despite having a target to reduce energy consumption of 3% per annum, it achieved a greater reduction of energy (of 17.8%, 18.5% and 19.3%) for the years 2021 to 2023. During the NEA 2024 evaluation, UTeM obtained the highest score among the candidates in the Energy Management in Large Buildings category, leading it to be declared the winner in this category.
